Bon Iver, Bon Iver

I had been dying to see Justin Vernon live ever since I heard his album For Emma, Forever ago in the winter of 2009. In addition to being wooed by the poignant back story, I felt a strong connection to the music. Not only to the lyrics, which are often rather cryptic leaving the listener pondering Vernon's true sentiments, but also to the sounds and the feelings it provoked. I remember times when my roommates and I would close and lock the door to our room, turn the lights off and just lye there listening to re:stacks. It was a spiritual renewal process of sorts which would always end in the conclusion "everything's gonna be ok".  I've listened to these tracks over a thousand times since then but their luster never seems to fade. You can imagine how thrilled I was to be able to see Vernon preform his newest album at The Chicago Theater on the 24th. Our seats were dead-center and a mere seven rows from the stage. As the band entered the room I was simultaneously star-struck and subdued. It was almost like seeing an old friend for the first time in a long while. Isn't that funny how you feel like you know someone just from listening to their music? It was great to see Justin Vernon doing so well since those cold winter months spent alone in a Wisconsin cabin. Same goes for seeing Bon Iver, Bon Iver so well-received and the subsequent success the band is experiencing. All things considered, I'd say this was one of the best live musical performances I've ever seen.
